The Comporta region boasts some of Portugal’s most breathtaking beaches, and some of Europe’s most unspoiled coastline.

Along 40 kilometres of endless sand, from Troia to Melides, there are beaches to suit everyone. For celebrity watching, try the best known beaches, with their mood music, water sports and restaurants offering refreshments and meals for a body-conscious clientele. Or there are deserted beaches, far from the crowds, slightly harder to reach but well worth the effort, where you will have the experience all to yourself.

But from the fashionable to the unknown, all the beaches share the same clear turquoise water, the golden sand stretching into the distance, an unforgettable seascape framed by the Arrábida hills and the pine woods and scrubland behind the dunes.

GASTRONOMY

Comporta is a region with a strong gastronomic identity. Local produce leaves us spoiled for choice. The sandy Troia peninsula is geographically part of the estuary of the River Sado. In recent years, the estuary’s waters have been cleaned and restored to their natural glory, and are home today to dolphins and oyster farms. The wetlands to the south are home to vast paddy fields. Just to the north, Sesimbra is one of Portugal’s prime fishing harbours. Inland, the fertile land between the Sado and the Tagus have been one of Europe’s legendary farming regions since before the Romans. The local wines, arable produce, fruit and vegetables are second to none. The pastures of the Alentejo produce Iberia’s finest pork and lamb.

All this and more is yours to enjoy in the region’s restaurants. Aromatic rice dishes, the freshest fish and seafood, organic meat and vegetables are just some of what Comporta has to offer. Variety, healthy options and simple luxuries mean you’ll always find something new to enjoy.

  • Serving seafood lunch and suppers on a mahogany deck overlooking the ocean. For a more casual meal, grab a seat on one of their oversized Adirondack chairs, stick your feet in the sand, and munch on cod fritters while the stellar sunset turns your vinho verde wine pink.   • Beach restaurant where you’ll find fish from the Atlantic Coast, shellfish, other international options and grilled meat. Includes are with loungers, shade and its own dedicated bar.

  • More elegant and prepared for the great summer affluences, the restaurant O Dinis bets on grilled fresh fish (sea bream, pargo, sardines and horse mackerel, among others), but also on seafood (good rice) and various snacks, especially clams. Open everyday for lunch & dinner

  • Dona Bia is a must do when visiting Comporta. It is conveniently located on the EN 261 on your way to Comporta, and near the turn off to Praia Torre. More importantly, for the consistently good traditional Portuguese food that attracts residents and tourists a like...and keeps them coming back for more.

  • (they do not accept reservations!) with a simple decoration that pays tribute to the region, its main purpose is to serve good traditional dishes in a family atmosphere. While choosing, pay attention to the wine selection, with good offers from the Setúbal Peninsula, and the excellent and unusual supply of whiskeys. The menu follows the “habits” of the land and features single or two-person bowls, where rice is accompanied by razor clams with shrimp, octopus with shrimp or shrimp with clams.

  • The progressive-palate minded restaurant churning out innovative dishes in an old horse stable. Feast on the sunny mezze-style dishes or crunchy veg with bean emulsion and skip dessert for one of the delicious post dinner cocktails.

  • After four decades of serving the best groceries in the area nearby, the Gomes family decided to be even more democratic and provide a good eating and drinking space. You can find many traditional appetizers (we call them petiscos), charcuterie board, octopus salad and amazing slow cooked port cheeks accompanied by good local wine, which you can start exploring on the terrace.

  • If you are looking for a typical Alentejo dinner, we recommend going for a grilled turkey stake at Bife de Peru. You can mention to the owner that you are coming from Spatia for the special treatment. No one speaks English, so you better have Google translator ready.

  • 30-year-old O Fadista is the place to go if you want a family atmosphere and traditional Portuguese food. Lovingly prepared dishes made with regional produce. Also has an outside terrace.

  • The menu has other suggestions, but it would be sacrilege to go through this restaurant and not go through the ex-libris of the house: the famous roast duck with kid's rice. Whole, half or in individual doses, arrives at the table with a hallucinating speed. In the Tia Rosa restaurant there are other delicacies worthy of memory, especially the roasted ones, such as the kid or the codfish, and, at the right time, a magnificent eel stew, which ends up making the choice more difficult.

  • It is in an old building, where many have learned the alphabet, and to remember those times, right at the entrance, a huge blackboard informs of the menu of the day. Pass with distinction the proof of the wild rabbit pie accompanied by pine nuts rice. Other alternatives in the restaurant are fried eels with tomato rice and partridge in the púcara. Take a look, without cheating, at the wine cellar, with good proposals and prices.
